Rene Nelson was born around 1955 at Warlu, a rockhole west of Irrunytju, near Papulankutja. She belongs to the Pitjantjatjarra language and cultural group. As a young child Rene lived a traditional lifestyle in the desert. She has raised many children and grandchildren, and is an active member of the community.
In her paintings Rene often draws on her knowledge of country, the location of important rockholes aound the place of her birth. She uses layers of vibrant colours intensified by presice uniform dotting.

Ngapa Jukurrpa Mikanji (meaning Water Dreaming) The custodians of this Jukurrpa or Dreaming are men of the Jangala/Jampijinpa skin groups, and women of the Nangala/Nampijinpa skin groups. The Dreaming travelled from Puyurru to the Mikanji creek where two ngapiri (river red gums) growing nearby represent the spirits of two blind women singing with tears in their eyes as they strained to see a huge storm that was unleashed by a rain ancestor. Ngalyipi Jukurrpa Yanjirlpiri (meaning Snake Vine Dreaming) At night under the stars, ngalyipi (snake vine) is used as a ceremonial wrap during the witi ceremony for the initiation of the sons and grandsons of the Japaljarri and Jungarrayi men. Rockhole Dreaming Heather Watson was born in 1967 in the bush at Iliwangu Illiwangu near Armata, South Australia. “That place of Wati Ngintaka Tjukurpa (Goanna Man Dreaming) that’s where I was born. There was no nurse and we had no car. Just my mother and father. Mina Mina Jukurrpa Ngalyipi Napangardi/Napanangka women and Japangardi/Japanangka men are the custodians of the Jukurrpa that created the area. This Jukurrpa or Dreaming story tells of the journey of a group of women who travelled far to the east gathering food, ngalyipi and performing ceremonies as they travelled. Water Dreaming Two Jangala rainmakers unleashed a giant storm travelling with a pamapardu Jukurrpa (termite Dreaming) to a waterhole where a gecko called Yumariyumari blew the storm on to Lapurrukurra and Wilpiri. Bolts of lightning shot out. The kurdukurdu mangkurdu Jukurrpa (children of the clouds Dreaming) created hills at Ngamangama using baby clouds and stuck long pointy clouds into the ground at Jukajuka where they can still be seen today as rock formations. Yarla Jukurrpa (meaning Bush Potato Dreaming) This Jukurrpa or Dreaming tells of yarla (bush potato) and wapir (bush carrot) ancestors fighting a big battle near a mulju (water soakage) called Ngarparapunyu.
